ANA MARIA MAIA GONÇALVES

Ana Maria Maia Gonçalves is a mediation trainer and practitioner and online dispute resolution expert. She has over 35 years of experience as a business leader in global organizations, as a lawyer, mediation trainer, mediator and executive coach.

She started her career in the IT industry and in only a few years, she was leading a team of 150 customer support professionals at Microsoft France, in a male-dominated environment, before launching successfully a highly strategic Regional Support Center for Microsoft Europe. She then got trained as a lawyer, became an international expert about conflict resolution, and then an executive coach and is now PCC accredited by the International Coaching Federation and and ICFML and IMI certified mediator. She developed an international non-for-profit organization dedicated to professionalizing the practice of mediation in Portuguese-speaking countries, the Certification and Training of Portuguese-speaking Mediators (ICFML), led a diverse team of volunteers based in three continents and had to regularly influence high-power stakeholders from various industries to get their buy-in. She is a regular lecturer in international conferences on conflict prevention, resolution and negotiation and delivers conflict resolution courses in various universities in Europe. More recently, before the pandemic made Zoom ubiquitous, she designed and delivered the first online course about how to use online technologies to resolve conflicts at distance.

With a rich experience in learning, practicing and teaching mediation worldwide, Ana is prepared to mediate in a unique way. She has experience in cross-border disputes in Europe, Australia and the United States. She is a lawyer and mediator (like so many) but her senior management experience at Microsoft has equipped her with a ready understanding of the nature of cross-border business and its complexities in a globalized business environment. Ana is an ideas person, but her deep roots in business and also in the law give her the unique ability to put those ideas in ways that resonate with business, while assisting business people to think beyond the usual boundaries of problem-solving.

Ana has strong intercultural skills; she has lived, worked and traveled in many countries, and she recognizes and adapts easily to a wide range of different demands and settings. Ana is a graduate from UAL Lisbon (2008). She is trilingual English, Portuguese and French. She lives in Malaysia with her husband and son, has two granddaughters who live in Australia with her daughter, and enjoys sailing and photography.

 

 

DANIEL RAINEY

Daniel Rainey is a principal in Holistic Solutions, Inc. (HSI ), and an adjunct faculty member in the graduate dispute resolution programs at Southern Methodist University, The McGeorge Law School of the University of the Pacific, and Dominican University.

He is currently a Fellow of the National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution, a member of the Board of Directors for the InternetBar.Org,  a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer for the Northern Virginia Mediation Service, and a founding member and founding Board Member of the International Council for Online Dispute Resolution (ICODR).  He is a member of the Accord Project (Dispute Resolution Working Group), a member of an ODR standards working group with IEEE-SA, and a member of the ODR Court Standards Task Force for the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution.

He was one of the instructors for the first university ODR course (at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst), and he has developed graduate level ODR courses for several universities, in addition to skills-based ODR training for dispute resolution centers and professional associations.  As a consultant, he has worked with clients in the the development of ODR resources, intercultural negotiation skills, Ombudsman programs, and organizational conflict engagement programs.

He is a member of the editorial board for Conflict Resolution Quarterly, and he is one of the Editors-in-Chief of the International Journal of Online Dispute Resolution.  He is an author/editor of the award-winning book, Online Dispute Resolution Theory and Practice, and numerous other book chapters and articles about ODR and ADR.

He is a member of the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Access to Justice Commission, Self-Represented Litigants Committee, and he has been the co-chair of the International Mediation Institute Task Force on E-Mediator Competencies.  As a member of the Ethics Committee of the Association for Conflict Resolution, he led a review of the ACR/ABA/AAA Model Rules for Mediators, and he participated as a member of the National Center for State Courts ODR Standards Working Group.
